Gamma-Ray Bursts from High Velocity Neutron Stars

چکیده
We investigate the viability of the Galactic halo model of γ-ray bursts by calculating the spatial distribution of neutron stars born with high velocities in the Galactic disk, and comparing the resulting brightness and angular distribution with the BATSE data. We find that the Galactic halo model can reproduce the BATSE peak flux and angular distribution data for neutron star kick velocities > ∼ 800 km s, source turn-on ages >∼ 10 Myrs, and sampling depths 100 kpc <∼ dmax <∼ 400 kpc.

Gamma - Ray Bursts from High - Velocity Neutron Stars
We investigate the viability of Galactic corona models of gamma-ray bursts by calculating the spatial distribution expected for a population of high-velocity neutron stars born in the Galactic disk and moving in a gravitational potential that includes contributions from the bulge, disk, and dark matter halo of our Galaxy and also from these same components of our neighboring galaxy M31. We cons...
متن کاملAccretion-Induced Conversion of High-Velocity Neutron Stars to Strange Stars in Supernovae and Implications for Gamma-Ray Bursts
We present a new model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that are not only associated with supernovae but also have small baryon contamination. In this model, we assume a newborn neutron star to move outward at a kick velocity of ∼ 10 km s in the supernova ejecta. We find that such a neutron star still hypercritically accretes its surrounding supernova matter. Once the stellar mass increases to some ...
متن کاملGalactic Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) continue to confound astrophysicists nearly a quarter century after their discovery (1). Before the launch of CGRO, most scientists thought that GRBs came from magnetic neutron stars residing in a thick disk (having a scale height of up to ∼ 2 kpc) in the Milky Way (2,3). The data gathered by BATSE showed the existence of a rollover in the cumulative brightness distribut...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Bursts from Neutron Star Kicks
The idea that gamma-ray bursts might be a kind of phenomena associated with neutron star kicks was first proposed by Dar & Plaga (1999). Here we study this mechanism in more detail and point out that the neutron star should be a high speed one (with proper motion larger than ∼ 1000 km/s). It is shown that the model agrees well with observations in many aspects, such as the energetics, the event...
متن کاملBounds on the Compactness of Neutron Stars from Brightness Oscillations During X-ray Bursts
The discovery of high-amplitude brightness oscillations at the spin frequency or its first overtone in six neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries during type 1 X-ray bursts provides a powerful new way to constrain the compactness of these stars, and hence to constrain the equation of state of the dense matter in all neutron stars. Here we present the results of general relativistic calculatio...
